About Fatih Mosque (Fatih Camii)

The imperial mosque of Mehmed the Conqueror, built over the vanished Church of the Holy Apostles; its tomb-shrine and vast college complex gave the whole Fatih district its name.

The Fatih Mosque was the first great imperial Ottoman mosque complex built in Constantinople after the 1453 conquest, and is regarded as the founding monument of the city's Ottoman architectural tradition. Commissioned by Sultan Mehmed II, it was built between 1463 and 1470 by the architect Atik Sinan on the site of the ruined Byzantine Church of the Holy Apostles, the former burial place of Byzantine emperors including Constantine the Great.

The original kulliye was vast, including eight theological colleges that together taught around a thousand students, along with a library, a hospital, a hospice, a caravanserai, a bath and a public soup kitchen for the poor. After the main dome collapsed in the earthquake of 1766, the mosque was rebuilt on a more Baroque plan in 1767-1771, so the building seen today is largely an 18th-century reconstruction. The complex also holds the tomb of Mehmed the Conqueror.

Did you know? The entire Fatih district, one of Istanbul's best-known quarters, takes its name from this mosque and from Mehmed II's epithet Fatih, meaning 'the Conqueror', so the building named the neighbourhood around it.
