About Pierre Loti Hill (Piyer Loti Tepesi)

A hilltop tea-garden viewpoint above Eyup with a sweeping panorama of the Golden Horn, named for French writer Pierre Loti and reached by cable car or a cemetery path.

Pierre Loti Hill is a hilltop viewpoint above the Eyup district, on the north-western shore of the Golden Horn, known for its panorama over the inlet and its cluster of tea gardens and cafes. It is named after the French novelist Pierre Loti, the pen name of naval officer Julien Viaud (1850-1923), whose Istanbul-set fiction, beginning with Aziyade in 1879, tied his name to the city. By tradition Loti frequented a cafe here, though that story is more heritage branding than documented fact.

The slope below is covered by the historic Eyup cemetery, one of the largest and oldest Muslim burial grounds in Istanbul, and a footpath climbs through the gravestones to the top. Since 2005 an aerial cable car has also connected the Golden Horn shore at Eyup with the hilltop, rising in under three minutes and, by official figures, carrying around four thousand passengers a day.

Did you know? 'Pierre Loti' was a pen name: the man was Julien Viaud, a career officer in the French Navy, whose Istanbul-set novel Aziyade (1879) helped bind his romantic literary identity to the city.
