About Princes' Islands (Adalar): Büyükada
A car-free archipelago in the Sea of Marmara, a short ferry from the city. Büyükada, the largest island, mixes faded wooden mansions, pine woods and a long history of exile.
The Princes' Islands (Turkish: Adalar) are an archipelago of nine islands in the Sea of Marmara southeast of Istanbul, forming the city's Adalar district; four are inhabited and all are reached by ferry. Büyükada, about 5.46 km², is the largest and the usual focus of a day trip. The islands' name reflects their long use as a place of exile, for out-of-favour Byzantine royalty and, after 1453, for members of the Ottoman ruling family.
The islands are essentially car-free: private motor traffic is banned and only service vehicles are allowed. The horse-drawn phaetons that long served as local transport were phased out in 2020 on animal-welfare grounds and replaced by electric vehicles, so people now travel on foot, by bicycle and by electric cart. Büyükada is dotted with 19th- and early-20th-century wooden mansions, a legacy of its heyday as a summer retreat. The exiled Leon Trotsky lived here from 1929 to 1933.
