About Theodosian Land Walls & Yedikule Fortress

The mighty double land walls that guarded Constantinople for a thousand years, breached only in 1453. Restored stretches, ruined towers and the Yedikule fortress still thread the peninsula.

The Theodosian Walls are the great land fortifications of Constantinople, built in the fifth century under Emperor Theodosius II; the main inner wall was completed in 413. They form a double-wall system, a higher inner wall about 5 metres thick and 12 metres high studded with 96 towers, a lower outer wall with a further 82 towers, and a broad moat in front. The land walls proper run about 5.7 km across the peninsula.

The walls defended the city for roughly a thousand years and were decisively breached only on 29 May 1453, when the army of Sultan Mehmed II broke through, ending the Byzantine Empire. They are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Historic Areas of Istanbul. At their southern end stands the Yedikule (Seven Towers) fortress, built by Mehmed II in 1458 around the Byzantine Golden Gate, and later used as a treasury and state prison.

Did you know? The land walls are a triple line of defence, a moat, a lower outer wall and a higher inner wall about 12 metres tall with 96 towers, running roughly 5.7 km across the peninsula.
