About Balat
A steep, photogenic quarter on the Golden Horn, historically shared by Jews, Greeks, Armenians and Bulgarians; its celebrated rainbow houses are mostly a recent, tourism-era repaint, not old tradition.
Balat is a historic neighbourhood in Istanbul's Fatih district, on the European shore of the Golden Horn between Fener and Ayvansaray. For centuries it was one of the city's most religiously mixed quarters, home to Jews alongside Greek Orthodox Christians, Armenians and Bulgarians, though its population today is overwhelmingly Muslim. It became a major Sephardic Jewish centre after Sultan Bayezid II welcomed Jews expelled from Spain in 1492, and at its peak is said to have had as many as eighteen synagogues.
The quarter lies within the Historic Areas of Istanbul, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. Landmarks include the Ahrida Synagogue, among the oldest in the city, and, on the shore nearby, the cast-iron Bulgarian St Stephen Church. In the 2020s Balat became one of Istanbul's most popular districts for tourism and photography; many of its now-famous brightly painted houses were repainted only recently, as part of this revival rather than as a historic colour scheme.
Did you know? Those internet-famous rainbow houses are largely a 21st-century makeover: many were repainted in vivid colours to draw visitors and photographers, rather than preserved from some historic Balat colour scheme.
