About Dolmabahçe Palace

The largest palace in Turkey, a lavish European-style residence built on the Bosphorus for Sultan Abdülmecid I, where clocks stand stopped at 09:05, the minute Atatürk died.

Dolmabahçe Palace was built on the European shore of the Bosphorus, in Beşiktaş, for Sultan Abdülmecid I, replacing the older wooden Beşiktaş Coastal Palace. Construction began in 1843 and the palace was occupied from 1856. It was designed by the Armenian court architects Karabet and Nigoğos Balyan and was the first European-style palace in Istanbul, serving as the main administrative centre of the Ottoman Empire during 1856–1887 and again 1909–1922.

The largest palace in Turkey, it contains 285 rooms, 46 halls, six hammams and 68 toilets. Its Ceremonial Hall holds a crystal chandelier weighing about 4.5 tonnes with 750 lamps, frequently described as the world's largest Bohemian crystal chandelier. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk died in the palace on 10 November 1938 at 09:05; the palace clocks were stopped afterward, and the clock in his bedroom remains set to that time.
