About Galata Bridge
A two-level bascule bridge across the Golden Horn, crowded above with rod-fishermen and lined below with fish restaurants, linking the old city at Eminönü to Karaköy and Galata.
The Galata Bridge spans the Golden Horn, linking the historic peninsula at Eminönü with Karaköy and the hill of Galata near the point where the Golden Horn meets the Bosphorus. The present structure, completed in 1994 by the Turkish firm STFA, is the fifth major bridge on the site: a bascule bridge about 490 metres long whose central spans can be raised to let large vessels pass.
It is built on two levels. The upper deck carries road lanes, a tram line and pedestrian walkways, while the lower deck is lined with fish restaurants, cafes and tea houses. Its railings are famously crowded with amateur anglers. Earlier bridges stood here from 1845 onward; the previous iron pontoon bridge of 1912 served until it was damaged by fire in 1992, and its salvaged sections were reused as a smaller crossing up the Golden Horn.
Did you know? The bridge you cross today dates from 1994 and is the fifth on the site. 'Galata Bridge' names a lineage of structures reaching back to the first fixed wooden crossing of 1845.
