About Sirkeci Terminal (Sirkeci Railway Station)
The ornate 1890 terminus where through trains from the Orient Express finally stopped, now home to a railway museum near the Golden Horn and the Eminönü ferry piers.
Sirkeci Terminal opened on 3 November 1890 as the grand terminus of the Oriental Railway on the European side of Istanbul, replacing a temporary building from 1873. The Prussian architect August Jasmund designed it in a European Orientalist style, combining Ottoman and Western motifs with rose windows, arched windows, banded masonry and a facade clock across roughly 1,200 square metres.
The station served as the eastern terminus of the Orient Express, where through trains from Paris arrived once the direct rail line was complete; the direct service ended on 19 May 1977. It stands on the historic peninsula near the Golden Horn, a short walk from the Eminönü ferry piers and the Galata Bridge. Today it houses the Istanbul Railway Museum, opened in 2005, and reopened in 2024 after restoration. The site is now also served by the Marmaray line and by tram.
Did you know? Despite the legend, the very first Orient Express of 1883 did not roll straight into Sirkeci; early passengers finished part of the trip by sea until the direct rail line opened in 1889.
