About Süleymaniye Mosque

Mimar Sinan's imperial masterpiece of 1557 crowns Istanbul's third hill: a vast, light-filled dome, four minarets, and the garden tombs of Suleiman the Magnificent and his wife Hürrem.

The Süleymaniye Mosque was designed by the imperial chief architect Mimar Sinan for Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and built between 1550 and 1557, with the surrounding complex completed shortly after. Widely regarded as Sinan's masterpiece in Istanbul and one of the grandest Ottoman imperial mosques, it crowns the city's third hill above the Golden Horn. Its central dome rises about 53 metres, roughly twice its diameter, and its four minarets carry ten balconies in total.

The mosque stands at the heart of a vast külliye, or charitable complex, which originally included madrasas, a medical school and hospital, a soup kitchen, a caravanserai, a bathhouse and revenue-generating shops. In the walled garden behind the qibla wall stand the domed tombs of Suleiman the Magnificent (died 1566) and his wife Hürrem Sultan, known in the West as Roxelana (died 1558); Sinan's own modest tomb lies just outside the complex. The quarter forms part of the UNESCO-listed Historic Areas of Istanbul.

Did you know? Over the main entrance Sinan built a soot room with an airflow system that drew in lamp smoke. The collected lampblack was scraped out and made into fine black ink for the sultan's calligraphers.
