About Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı)

A labyrinth of painted vaulted lanes, sorted by trade since the 1450s, where thousands of shops sell gold, carpets, lamps and Turkish delight to hundreds of thousands daily.

The Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) is one of Istanbul's oldest covered markets, begun under Sultan Mehmed II soon after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453. Its masonry core, the İç (Cevahir) Bedesten, was built in the mid-1450s, and the enclosed market had taken shape by around 1460-61. A second hall, the Sandal Bedesten, anchored its later expansion. The complex was endowed to generate rental income for the city's great imperial mosques and long served as the commercial and financial heart of the Ottoman capital.

Covering roughly 30,700 square metres, the bazaar is commonly described as holding more than 4,000 shops along about 61 covered streets, though such counts vary widely by source. Historically organised into guild-controlled quarters by trade, it still groups jewellers, carpet-sellers, lamp-makers and confectioners along painted vaulted lanes. It is frequently called one of the world's oldest and largest covered markets, a popular superlative rather than a certified record, and it draws vast daily crowds.

Did you know? The bazaar guarded itself: its roughly eighteen gates were locked nightly and the guilds paid their own patrols. When 30,000 gold coins were stolen in 1591, the whole market closed for about two weeks.
