About Istanbul Archaeology Museums
Osman Hamdi Bey's three-museum complex below Topkapi holds a million antiquities, from the misnamed Alexander Sarcophagus to a Bronze Age peace treaty whose copy hangs at the United Nations.
The Istanbul Archaeology Museums are a complex of three museums on the slope below Topkapi Palace, beside Gulhane Park, founded on 13 July 1891 by the painter and archaeologist Osman Hamdi Bey. The three buildings are the main Archaeological Museum, designed by Alexandre Vallaury; the Museum of the Ancient Orient; and the Museum of Islamic Art in the Tiled Kiosk (Cinili Kosk), which Mehmed II commissioned in 1472 as the oldest surviving secular Ottoman building in the city. The collection numbers roughly one million objects, and the museums won the Council of Europe Museum Prize in 1991.
Its best-known work, the Alexander Sarcophagus, is named for its reliefs of Alexander the Great rather than as his tomb; scholars believe it was most likely made for Abdalonymus of Sidon. The Museum of the Ancient Orient holds a cuneiform tablet of the Treaty of Kadesh.
Did you know? Despite its name, the Alexander Sarcophagus never held Alexander the Great. It is carved with battle and hunt scenes featuring him, but was most likely made for Abdalonymus, a king of Sidon.
