About Hagia Irene (Hagia Eirene)
The palace church that never became a mosque: a fourth-century Byzantine sanctuary of Holy Peace, later an Ottoman arsenal, now a concert hall prized for its soaring acoustics.
Hagia Irene (Hagia Eirene, 'Holy Peace') is a Byzantine church in the first courtyard of Topkapi Palace, traditionally founded by Constantine I in the fourth century, though the date is debated. It hosted the First Council of Constantinople in 381, which reaffirmed the Nicene Creed and condemned Arianism. The original building was destroyed in the Nika revolt of 532 and rebuilt by Justinian I, then damaged by an earthquake in 740 and restored under Constantine V. Its apse preserves a rare eighth-century Iconoclast mosaic, a plain black cross on gold, and the only Byzantine synthronon still standing in place in Istanbul.
It is one of only two Byzantine churches in the city never converted into a mosque. After 1453 the Ottomans enclosed it within the palace and used it as an arsenal and later a military museum. Today it serves as a concert and exhibition hall.
Did you know? Of all Constantinople's great Byzantine churches, only two were never turned into mosques after 1453. Hagia Irene is one; instead the Ottomans sealed it inside Topkapi Palace and stored their weapons there.
