About Hagia Sophia

A vast domed masterpiece finished in 537, Hagia Sophia has served in turn as Orthodox cathedral, Ottoman mosque and museum, and stands today as a working mosque.

Hagia Sophia stands on the First Hill of Istanbul, in the historic Sultanahmet district. The present building was completed in 537 under the Byzantine emperor Justinian I, designed by Isidore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralles. For about a thousand years it was the cathedral of Constantinople and the seat of the Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch, and it long ranked as the largest church in the world. Its central dome, roughly 33 metres across, rests on pendentives that carry the weight onto four piers.

After the Ottoman conquest of 1453, Sultan Mehmed II converted the church into a mosque and minarets were added. The Turkish Republic secularised the building in 1934 and opened it as a museum in 1935. A 2020 court ruling annulled that status, and the building has functioned as a working mosque since. Figural mosaics facing the qibla are curtained during prayers. It is part of the UNESCO-listed Historic Areas of Istanbul.

Did you know? The dome's crown rises about 55.6 metres above the floor and spans some 33 metres, yet it rests on four curved triangles called pendentives rather than on any interior wall or column.
