About Gulhane Park (Gulhane Parki)
Once the sultan's private rose garden inside Topkapi Palace, this leafy park on Seraglio Point opened to the public in 1912 and still runs down to the Bosphorus.
Gulhane Park (Gulhane Parki, 'house of roses') is a historic urban park on Seraglio Point in the Fatih district, covering about 9.7 hectares. It was originally the outer garden of Topkapi Palace, the imperial rose garden, and a section was laid out as a public park by the municipality and opened in 1912, making it one of the city's oldest and largest public parks. A major renovation in the 2000s removed a former zoo and amusement facilities and restored the landscape, revealing trees dating from the 1800s.
The park gave its name to the 1839 Edict of Gulhane, proclaimed by Grand Vizier Mustafa Resid Pasha, which launched the Ottoman Tanzimat reforms. It contains the Roman Column of the Goths, the Procession Kiosk (Alay Kosku) housing the Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar Museum Library, a statue of Ataturk, and the Museum of the History of Science and Technology in Islam.
