About Topkapi Palace
Begun by Mehmed II soon after 1453, Topkapi was the sultans' palace for nearly four centuries, a walled world of four courtyards, the Harem, Treasury and Sacred Relics.
Topkapi Palace stands on Seraglio Point in Istanbul, overlooking the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus. Construction began around 1460 under Sultan Mehmed II, soon after the 1453 conquest of Constantinople, and later sultans expanded the complex. For nearly four centuries it was the main residence and the administrative and ceremonial seat of the Ottoman sultans, until the court moved to Dolmabahce Palace in the mid-19th century. The palace is laid out as a sequence of four courtyards leading progressively inward, from public to private, alongside the secluded Harem.
The Harem was the private world of the sultan's household, home to the valide sultan, his consorts and children, and eunuch and female staff, in hundreds of tiled rooms. The Imperial Treasury displays the Topkapi Dagger and the roughly 86-carat Spoonmaker's Diamond, while the Chamber of the Sacred Relics holds Islamic relics attributed to the Prophet Muhammad. Turned into a museum in 1924, Topkapi forms part of the UNESCO-listed Historic Areas of Istanbul.
Did you know? Rather than one grand building, Topkapi is a sequence of four courtyards leading inward from public to private; the Ottoman sultans lived and governed here for nearly four centuries after Mehmed II founded it.
