About Rüstem Pasha Mosque
A dazzling jewel-box by the architect Sinan, raised on a terrace above a busy market street and sheathed in some of the finest İznik tilework of any Ottoman mosque.
The Rüstem Pasha Mosque was designed by the imperial architect Mimar Sinan and built about 1561-1563 for the grand vizier Rüstem Pasha, son-in-law of Suleiman the Magnificent through his marriage to the sultan's daughter Mihrimah Sultan. Because Rüstem Pasha died in 1561, the mosque was largely completed after his death. It is raised on a high terrace above a complex of vaulted shops whose rents endowed its upkeep, in the crowded Hasırcılar Çarşısı market of the Tahtakale district near Eminönü.
The mosque is celebrated above all for its İznik tilework, clad inside and out in one of the most extensive tile revetments of any Ottoman mosque, with roughly 2,300 tiles in around 80 patterns. The designs feature tulips, carnations, roses and hyacinths and an early use of the 'tomato red' pigment prized in the finest İznik ceramics. Not every tile is a sixteenth-century original; some panels have been repaired or replaced over time, most recently in a restoration completed around 2021.
Did you know? Because the prayer hall sits on a raised terrace above the market, it is reached by inconspicuous, easily missed staircases tucked among the shops, so many people pass beneath without ever noticing it.
