About Götaplatsen

Gothenburg's cultural square at the head of the Avenyn, built for the 1923 jubilee and framed by the art museum, concert hall and theatre, with Carl Milles' giant bronze Poseidon rising from its fountain.

Götaplatsen is the monumental square that closes the top of the Avenyn, laid out for Gothenburg's 300th-anniversary exhibition of 1923 as the city's cultural forum. Three yellow-brick institutions in a shared classical style frame it: the Museum of Art, the Concert Hall and the City Theatre, with the City Library alongside.

At its centre stands the square's icon, Carl Milles' bronze Poseidon, about seven metres tall, unveiled in 1931. The sea-god holds a spouting fish and a conch above a basin of tritons and sea creatures. Many citizens disliked the statue at first, but it has long since become one of the great symbols of the city.
