About Gothenburg Cathedral

The city's calm neoclassical cathedral, consecrated in 1815 after two earlier churches burned down. White and gold inside, it keeps gilded baroque altar angels that were rescued from the great fire of 1802.

Gothenburg Cathedral, the Domkyrkan or Gustavi Cathedral, is the seat of the city's Lutheran bishop and stands on Kyrkogatan in the old centre. The present neoclassical building, designed by Carl Wilhelm Carlberg and consecrated in 1815, is light and restrained, with a Doric-columned portico; its tower was finished a decade later. It became a cathedral when the diocese was created in 1665.

The church has twice risen from disaster, rebuilt after the fires of 1721 and 1802. Inside, white walls and gold ornament lead to the altar, where gilded baroque angels sculpted in 1752 survived the 1802 fire, as did an 18th-century clock. The square around it was for centuries a burial ground.
