About Gustaf Adolfs Torg

The old civic heart of Gothenburg by the canal, named for the bronze statue of the city's founder King Gustavus Adolphus, and framed by the Town Hall with its famous modern extension and the Stock Exchange.

Gustaf Adolfs Torg, by the Stora Hamnkanalen in the old town, has long been Gothenburg's civic square. At its centre stands the city's oldest public monument, a bronze statue of its founder King Gustav II Adolf, unveiled in 1854, who points down to the ground in the legendary moment when he chose the city's site.

The square is framed by the Town Hall (Rådhuset), first built in 1672, whose celebrated 1930s extension by Gunnar Asplund is a landmark of modern Swedish architecture, together with the old Stock Exchange and City Hall. A few steps away stands Kronhuset, a Dutch-style brick arsenal of the 1640s that is among the city's oldest buildings.
