About Gothenburg Botanical Garden
One of Europe's larger botanical gardens, set against a nature reserve, with a famous rock garden in an old quarry, a Japanese glade, rhododendron slopes and a spring valley carpeted with wood anemones.
Gothenburg Botanical Garden, the Botaniska trädgården, is one of the larger botanical gardens in Europe, its cultivated grounds set against the wooded Änggårdsbergen nature reserve. It opened its woodland in 1919 and its gardens in 1923, and holds many thousands of plant species.
Its celebrated Rock Garden, laid out in a former quarry and finished in 1929, tumbles with alpine plants and waterfalls; nearby lie a Japanese glade, a valley of rhododendrons and formal pools. In spring the woodland fills with the white wood anemones that are the garden's symbol. The old greenhouses are closed while new ones are built, with a reopening planned around 2030.
