About Masthugg Church

A landmark red-brick church of 1914 on a hill above the harbour, in the bold National Romantic style, with a towering spire seen across the city and a dark timber ceiling like an upturned ship's hull.

Masthugg Church, Masthuggskyrkan, stands high on a rocky hill above the harbour district, a landmark of Gothenburg completed in 1914. Designed by Sigfrid Ericson in the bold National Romantic style, its tower rises about sixty metres and is visible across much of the city.

Built of hand-laid red brick, the church has a soaring interior of whitewashed walls under a dark timber ceiling, often likened to the upturned hull of a ship, in a city of sailors. A model of a full-rigged ship hangs in the nave, and the church holds the largest organ in the Gothenburg diocese. Its hilltop setting gives wide views over the port.
