About Skansen Kronan
A stout 17th-century crown-topped fortress on a hill above Haga, built to guard Gothenburg against the Danes but never tested in battle, with cannon windows, thick stone walls and a sweeping city view.
Skansen Kronan, the 'Crown Sconce', is a 17th-century redoubt crowning the Risåsberget hill above Haga. Designed by the great military engineer Erik Dahlbergh and begun in 1687, it was built, with its twin Skansen Lejonet, to stop an enemy seizing the heights that overlooked the city, chiefly against the threat from Denmark.
Its stone walls are several metres thick and pierced with cannon windows, and a gilded crown sits on its roof. The fort was never attacked and its guns are said never to have fired in anger; it later served as a prison and then, for a century, as a military museum. Its interior is now a private event venue, but the hilltop is open and gives one of Gothenburg's finest views.
