About Kungsportsavenyn
Gothenburg's grand boulevard, nearly a kilometre of tree-lined pavements, cafes, bars and 19th-century facades, running from the old moat up to the cultural square of Götaplatsen and its Poseidon statue.
Kungsportsavenyn, universally shortened to Avenyn, is Gothenburg's main boulevard, running for close to a kilometre from the Kungsport bridge over the old moat up to Götaplatsen. Planned from the 1860s as the city's first grand middle-class street outside the old fortifications, it was said to be modelled on the great avenues of Europe, with wide tree-lined pavements that began as front gardens.
It was extended to Götaplatsen for the 1923 jubilee, and trams still run down its middle. Today the Avenyn is the city's social spine, lined with cafes, restaurants, bars and clubs, busiest in the evening and strung with lights at Christmas, when the trees along it glow all the way to Poseidon.
