About Feskekôrka (the Fish Church)
The 'Fish Church', an 1874 fish market hall built to look like a Gothic church, standing by the canal. After a long restoration it reopened in 2024 with a sweep of fish counters, bars and restaurants.
Feskekôrka, the 'Fish Church', is an indoor fish and seafood market hall on the Rosenlundskanalen, opened in 1874 to a design by the city architect Victor von Gegerfelt. Its pointed arches and steep gable gave it the look of a Gothic-revival church, and the people of Gothenburg nicknamed it the fish church almost at once. It has been a protected building since 2013.
After the main fish trade moved to a harbour in 1910, Feskekôrka stayed a beloved retail market and city landmark. It closed in 2020 for a thorough restoration that reinforced its foundations and repaired its old timber frame, and it reopened on 16 May 2024 with a long fish counter, bars and restaurants and a canal-side terrace.
