The Delphi route at a glance
Day 1
Day 1 covers 6 stops over about 2.1 km as the crow flies, from Tholos of Delphi (Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia) to Sacred Way. ≈ 2.1 km between stops, straight line
Morning
- Tholos of Delphi (Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia): The round temple that became Delphi's postcard image: three Doric columns re-erected on the Marmaria terrace, exquisitely built around 380 BC, and still a genuine architectural mystery. 0.7 km to the next stop
- Delphi Archaeological Museum: The bronze Charioteer, calm and glass-eyed, headlines a hillside museum of Delphi's finest offerings: the Naxian sphinx, twin Archaic youths, a hammered silver bull, and the carved omphalos. 0.6 km to the next stop
- Delphi (Modern Village): A pretty balconied town on the Parnassus slope that exists only because its old self, Kastri, was moved off the sanctuary in the 1890s so France could excavate. 0.5 km to the next stop
Afternoon
- Ancient Stadium of Delphi: High above the theatre and temple, on the sanctuary's top terrace, the track where the Pythian Games' athletes raced, its stone starting line and seating still remarkably intact. 0.3 km to the next stop
- Treasury of the Athenians: A small Doric treasury of Parian marble, built by Athens to celebrate victory over Persia, its thirty carved metopes pairing the labours of Herakles with the deeds of Theseus. 0 km to the next stop
- Sacred Way: The processional road climbing through the sanctuary to Apollo's temple, once lined with about twenty treasuries and a forest of victory monuments raised by rival Greek cities.
Day 2
Day 2 covers 6 stops over about 24 km as the crow flies, from Temple of Apollo to Monastery of Hosios Loukas. ≈ 24 km between stops, straight line
Morning
- Temple of Apollo: The re-erected Doric columns of Apollo's 4th-century-BC temple, the seat of the Delphic oracle, where the priestess known as the Pythia was said to speak for the god. 0 km to the next stop
- Ancient Theatre of Delphi: A 4th-century-BC theatre of Parnassian limestone set above the temple, its 35 rows seating around 4,500 for the song and music contests of the Pythian Games. 0.4 km to the next stop
- Castalian Spring: The sacred spring where pilgrims, athletes and the Pythia herself washed before facing the oracle, surviving as two fountains carved into the gorge below the Phaedriades cliffs. 0.2 km to the next stop
Afternoon
- Ancient Gymnasium of Delphi: Delphi's ancient training ground on two terraces: running tracks and a colonnade above, a wrestling court and round cold-water pool below, later buried under a monastery. 6.9 km to the next stop
- Arachova: A tiered stone town high on Parnassus, ten kilometres from Delphi, known for grilled formaela cheese, hand-woven rugs, and its role as base for Greece's biggest ski resort. 17 km to the next stop
- Monastery of Hosios Loukas: A Byzantine monastery near Distomo, about 35 km from Delphi, where two 10th- and 11th-century churches shelter gold-ground mosaics UNESCO ranks among the finest of their age.
Distances are straight-line between stops; streets add a little.
