About Ancient Stadium of Delphi
High above the theatre and temple, on the sanctuary's top terrace, the track where the Pythian Games' athletes raced, its stone starting line and seating still remarkably intact.
The Ancient Stadium of Delphi occupies the highest terrace of the sanctuary, above the theatre and the Temple of Apollo. Its track measures about 178 metres long, one Pythian stade, and roughly 25.5 metres wide. It staged the athletic contests of the Pythian Games, one of the four Panhellenic festivals, held every four years in honour of Apollo. The stone spectator seating, giving a capacity of roughly 6,500, largely belongs to the Roman period.
Pausanias credits the benefactor Herodes Atticus with the stone revetment of the seats in the 2nd century AD, a project left unfinished. The stone starting line survives, with carved foot-grooves and sockets that once held the hysplex, the mechanical starting-gate that released the runners together. Four large pillars at the eastern end supported a monumental triple-arched entrance, and an inscription in the retaining wall forbids carrying away wine reserved for the sacred rituals. It is often described as the best-preserved ancient stadium in Greece.
Did you know? The preserved stone starting line still shows its foot-grooves and the sockets for the hysplex, a mechanical starting-gate that released every runner at the same moment to prevent a false start.
