About Delphi (Modern Village)
A pretty balconied town on the Parnassus slope that exists only because its old self, Kastri, was moved off the sanctuary in the 1890s so France could excavate.
The modern village of Delphi sits on the southwestern slope of Mount Parnassus, immediately beside the archaeological zone. It was created in the 1890s to rehouse the inhabitants of Kastri, the old village that had grown up directly over the buried sanctuary of Apollo. Under a France-Greece agreement of 1891, the roughly 400 houses of Kastri were expropriated and cleared from 1892, and the residents were resettled at the present site.
The relocation allowed the French School at Athens to carry out its 'Great Excavation' (La Grande Fouille) of 1892 to 1903, directed by Theophile Homolle. The archaeological site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987. Today the village is lined with tavernas, hotels and balconies overlooking the valley, where the extensive Amfissa olive grove spreads down toward the Gulf of Corinth near Itea.
Did you know? The whole town is a relocation. In the 1890s some 400 houses of old Kastri were cleared off the sanctuary of Apollo and rebuilt nearby, so French archaeologists could dig where the village had stood.
