About Delphi Archaeological Museum

The bronze Charioteer, calm and glass-eyed, headlines a hillside museum of Delphi's finest offerings: the Naxian sphinx, twin Archaic youths, a hammered silver bull, and the carved omphalos.

The Delphi Archaeological Museum holds the finds from the ancient sanctuary of Apollo, displayed near the excavation site on the slope of Mount Parnassus. Its most celebrated exhibit is the bronze Charioteer of Delphi, dated to about 480-470 BC and dedicated by Polyzalos, tyrant of Gela in Sicily, to commemorate a chariot victory in the Pythian Games. Standing about 1.8 metres tall, it survived because the earthquake of 373 BC buried it, and it was recovered during the French excavations of 1896.

Other highlights include the marble Sphinx of the Naxians, offered around 560 BC and once raised on a tall Ionic column; the twin Archaic kouroi traditionally identified as Kleobis and Biton, made by an Argive workshop about 580 BC; and a large silver bull built from hammered metal sheets. A marble omphalos wrapped in a carved woollen net is also on display.

Did you know? The Charioteer owes his survival to catastrophe. When an earthquake struck Delphi in 373 BC, it buried the bronze under rubble, hiding it from metal scavengers until French archaeologists dug it out in 1896.
