The Monastery of Hosios Loukas is a Byzantine monastic complex near the town of Distomo, on the western slopes of Mount Helicon in Boeotia, roughly 35 kilometres by road east-southeast of Delphi. It grew up around the hermit-saint Luke of Steiris (c. 896-953), a monk and reputed healer who settled and was buried at the site. The complex contains two adjoining churches: the older 10th-century Church of the Theotokos (Panagia) and the larger Katholikon, built in the early 11th century to house the saint's relics.
Hosios Loukas has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990, inscribed jointly with the monasteries of Daphni and Nea Moni of Chios. According to UNESCO, the Katholikon preserves the best-preserved complex of mosaics from the 'Macedonian Renaissance', set on gold grounds. The Katholikon is also a leading example of the octagonal-domed church type, which influenced later Middle Byzantine architecture.
