About Arachova
A tiered stone town high on Parnassus, ten kilometres from Delphi, known for grilled formaela cheese, hand-woven rugs, and its role as base for Greece's biggest ski resort.
Arachova is a stone-built mountain town on the southern slopes of Mount Parnassus, at roughly 950 metres and about 10 kilometres by road east of Delphi. Its narrow cobbled streets and grey stone houses cascade down the steep slope in tiers, giving the town its distinctive stacked appearance. The main street is lined with shops selling the handmade woven textiles, including woollen rugs and carpets, for which the town has long been known.
Arachova gives its name to formaela, a firm sheep's-milk cheese with Protected Designation of Origin status that is traditionally grilled or fried. In winter the town becomes one of Greece's leading winter-sports destinations, serving as the base for the Parnassos Ski Centre, the largest ski resort in the country, a short drive above. Its biggest annual event is the festival of Agios Georgios (Saint George), held around 23 April.
Did you know? Arachova lends its name to formaela, a firm sheep's-milk cheese with protected-origin status. Cut into slabs and grilled or fried until golden, it is the town's signature bite, best eaten hot.
