About Castalian Spring

The sacred spring where pilgrims, athletes and the Pythia herself washed before facing the oracle, surviving as two fountains carved into the gorge below the Phaedriades cliffs.

The Castalian Spring rises in the ravine between the two Phaedriades cliffs, east of the sanctuary of Apollo, its cold water flowing down the gorge. Visitors coming to consult the oracle, and competitors in the Pythian Games, washed here, and the Pythia and priests purified themselves before the oracle was delivered. An Archaic fountain house of the 6th century BC survives, with a marble-lined basin, surrounding benches, and water delivered through lion-head spouts.

A second, later fountain, dated to about the 1st century BC, was cut into the rock higher up the ravine, with a paved court and seven bronze spouts on its facade. Niches cut into the rock face above held votive offerings dedicated to the nymph Castalia. Water reached the fountains by aqueduct and a system of pipes fed from higher up the mountain. One of the rock-cut niches was later converted into a Christian chapel of St John the Baptist.

Did you know? Before the oracle spoke, purification was mandatory. Ancient writers report that the Pythia and the priests themselves washed at the Castalian Spring, and pilgrims and Pythian Games competitors rinsed here on arrival.
