About Ancient Gymnasium of Delphi

Delphi's ancient training ground on two terraces: running tracks and a colonnade above, a wrestling court and round cold-water pool below, later buried under a monastery.

The Ancient Gymnasium of Delphi occupies terraces below the sanctuary of Apollo, in the area between the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia and the Castalian Spring. Built around 330 BC, this 4th-century BC complex trained athletes, some of whom competed in the Pythian Games. It is arranged on two levels. The upper terrace held the running facilities: the xystos, a roofed colonnade about 186 metres long, and an open-air track (the paradromis) about 172 metres long and 6 metres wide.

The lower terrace held the palaestra, a square open courtyard for wrestling and boxing, surrounded by porticoes and rooms. West of it lay a circular cold-water pool about 10 metres across and 1.80 metres deep, fed from the Castalian Spring and serving ten stone wash-basins; Roman-era hot baths were added nearby. The whole complex later lay buried beneath the Monastery of the Dormition of the Virgin until it was excavated.

Did you know? A well-repeated story holds that in 1809 the poet Lord Byron carved his name on a column here, reportedly the same one signed by Lord Aberdeen, a future British prime minister.
