About Tholos of Delphi (Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia)
The round temple that became Delphi's postcard image: three Doric columns re-erected on the Marmaria terrace, exquisitely built around 380 BC, and still a genuine architectural mystery.
The Tholos is a circular building on the Marmaria terrace, within the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia, east of and below the main sanctuary of Apollo. It was built around 380 to 370 BC. According to the Roman writer Vitruvius, the architect was Theodorus of Phocaea, who reportedly wrote a treatise on the building. An outer ring of twenty Doric columns, each about 5.93 metres tall, enclosed a circular cella whose interior wall carried Corinthian half-columns. The structure combined poros and limestone foundations with a floor and roof of white marble and dark Eleusinian limestone.
A sculpted frieze of roughly forty metopes depicted scenes of the Amazonomachy and the Centauromachy. Despite its refined design and prominent setting, the building's original function remains unidentified; proposals include a cult building, a treasury for votive offerings, or a hall for performance. Three columns with their entablature were re-erected in 1938, giving the monument its familiar modern silhouette.
Did you know? The Roman architect-writer Vitruvius records that Theodorus of Phocaea designed the Tholos and thought so highly of his work that he wrote an entire book explaining how he had built it.
