About Wutach Gorge

The Wutach Gorge is a wild river gorge and nature reserve in the southeastern Black Forest, with deep rock walls, a famous hiking trail and an exceptional geological cross-section.

The Wutach Gorge, or Wutachschlucht, is a wild river gorge and nature reserve in the southeastern Black Forest. The gorge system extends more than 33 river kilometres, excluding side gorges, with walls roughly 60 to 170 metres deep. It was designated a nature reserve on 26 July 1939 and covers about 968.8 hectares, administered by the Regierungspräsidium Freiburg. Its walls expose a continuous rock sequence from the mostly granite basement through the Triassic to the Jurassic, one of Europe's most diverse geological profiles.

The Wutach takes its name at the confluence of the Gutach and Haslach and is a right-hand tributary of the High Rhine, joining it near Waldshut-Tiengen. In the Middle Gorge the river can run completely dry for about 1.3 kilometres at low water, sinking into limestone before reappearing. It is a well-known hiking route, with an elaborate trail system maintained by the Schwarzwaldverein, including the Ludwig-Neumann-Weg, passing points such as Schattenmühle, Bad Boll, Dietfurt and Wutachmühle.

Did you know? The Wutach Gorge is a geological showcase. Its walls run through rock from the granite basement up into the Jurassic, and nearly every rock type found in Southern Germany appears somewhere along the gorge.
