About Titisee
Titisee is a glacial lake in the southern Black Forest, ringed by the resort town of Titisee-Neustadt, with a busy promenade, boat rentals and summer swimming, sailing and windsurfing.
Titisee is a lake in the southern Black Forest, or Hochschwarzwald, in Baden-Württemberg. It is of glacial origin: a glacier reaching down from the Feldberg carved the basin and left a terminal moraine as it retreated. The surface lies at about 845 metres above sea level, with a maximum depth of around 39 metres. Its surface area is given inconsistently, as roughly 1.07 to 1.3 square kilometres. The outflow, the River Gutach, joins the Haslach to form the Wutach.
The resort town of Titisee-Neustadt sits on the north shore, offering wellness and spa hotels with Kneipp and Fango treatments. Summer activities on and around the water include swimming, sailing, windsurfing and hiking, while the nearby Hochfirstschanze is described as the largest natural ski jump in Germany. Water from the lake ultimately drains via the Wutach toward the High Rhine between Tiengen and Waldshut. The origin of the name Titisee remains uncertain, with several competing explanations.
Did you know? Titisee was carved by ice. During the Pleistocene, a glacier flowing down from the Feldberg gouged out the lake basin and left a terminal moraine behind as it retreated, until roughly ten thousand years ago.
