About Baden-Baden
A spa town on the Black Forest's north-western edge, where Romans took the waters and 19th-century Europe came to gamble, promenade and be seen at the grand Kurhaus.
Baden-Baden sits in the Oos valley on the north-western edge of the Black Forest, in Baden-Württemberg. The Romans knew it as Aquae and Aurelia Aquensis, drawing on thermal springs whose water still rises warm from the ground; Roman bath ruins were rediscovered in 1847. Around 29 springs feed the town, at temperatures roughly between 46 and 67 degrees Celsius. In the 19th century the resort became a fashionable international address, reaching its height under Napoleon III in the 1850s and 1860s, when it earned the nickname 'Europe's summer capital.'
The Classical Kurhaus, its main building raised between 1821 and 1823 to designs by Friedrich Weinbrenner, houses the casino behind eight Corinthian columns. Nearby stand the columned Trinkhalle pump room and the Renaissance-Revival Friedrichsbad, opened in 1877. In 2021 the town joined ten others as part of the UNESCO 'Great Spa Towns of Europe.'
