About Freiburg Old Town (Altstadt)

Freiburg im Breisgau was founded in 1120 by the House of Zähringen as a free market town, on the western edge of the Black Forest in the Breisgau. Its old town is threaded with the Bächle, small open water channels once fed from the Dreisam river. They historically supplied water for fighting fires and watering livestock, and today they also help cool the streets in summer. Two medieval gate towers survive: the Martinstor, whose timbers date to 1202 and which was raised to about 60 metres in 1901, and the younger Schwabentor.
The Münsterplatz, the cathedral square, hosts a farmers' market every day except Sundays, spread around the Gothic Freiburg Minster. The University of Freiburg, one of Germany's oldest, was founded in 1457. On 27 November 1944 an RAF raid heavily damaged the centre, which was afterwards rebuilt on its medieval street plan.
