About Triberg Waterfalls
On the Gutach river in the Black Forest, Triberg's waterfalls tumble in stages down a rocky valley, dropping about 163 metres over a much-photographed staircase of white water.
The Triberg Waterfalls sit at Triberg im Schwarzwald in Baden-Württemberg, where the Gutach river descends from a high plain into a rocky V-shaped valley. Rather than a single plunge, the water falls in a series of cascade steps, with a total drop of about 163 metres. English Wikipedia describes seven major steps, while the German account counts up to ten stages including the upper section. A small historic hydroelectric plant still runs at the top of the falls.
A sign at the site calls these Germany's highest waterfall, but both English and German Wikipedia record that claim as incorrect, since the Röthbachfall near the Königssee is far taller. They are more accurately counted among Germany's higher and best-known cascades. Opened to the public in 1805 and popular since the railway arrived, the falls remain a gated, paid attraction with lit trails winding past viewpoints at several levels.
Did you know? The claim that Triberg has Germany's highest waterfall is wrong. Both English and German Wikipedia point to the Röthbachfall near the Königssee, with a drop of nearly 470 metres, as the country's highest.
