About Allerheiligen (All Saints' Abbey and Waterfalls)

Allerheiligen pairs the romantic ruins of a Premonstratensian abbey with the nearby Allerheiligen Waterfalls, where the Grindenbach drops over seven cascade stages in the Northern Black Forest.

All Saints' Abbey, or Kloster Allerheiligen, was a Premonstratensian monastery near Oppenau in the upper Lierbach valley of the Black Forest, at about 620 metres elevation. It was founded around 1192 by Duchess Uta of Schauenburg, with a foundation charter issued in 1196 and papal confirmation in 1204. The abbey was secularized in November 1802 by Margrave Karl Friedrich of Baden, and in 1804 a lightning bolt struck the church tower and caused irreversible destruction. The medieval church survives today as romantic ruins.

Below the ruins are the Allerheiligen Waterfalls, formed by the Grindenbach, the upper course of the Lierbach, descending over seven cascade stages. German Wikipedia gives a total drop of about 66 metres and calls them the largest natural waterfalls of the Northern Black Forest, while some tourism sources cite about 83 metres and a wider superlative. A sandstone stairway has run alongside the falls since 1964, past pools known as 'Bütten', or tubs.

Did you know? By legend, Duchess Uta chose the site with a donkey: she tied a bag of gold to it and let it roam, building her first chapel where it finally threw off the load.
