About Hexenlochmühle

A much-photographed 19th-century double-wheeled watermill in the wooded Hexenloch gorge near Furtwangen, in the central Black Forest; its wheels still turn above a family-run restaurant and shop.

The Hexenlochmühle is a historic watermill in the Hexenloch, a narrow wooded gorge in the central Black Forest, on the territory of Furtwangen-Neukirch. It is a double mill with two water wheels, a smaller one and a larger of about 4 metres diameter. The smaller-wheel section was built in 1825, originally as a nail smithy, and a larger wheel was later added to drive a sawmill. Water from the Heubach stream, about 300 litres per second, powers the wheels, producing up to roughly 13 horsepower.

The mill has stayed in the same family since 1839 and is now run by the fifth generation. Its larger wheel still turns saws for demonstration, and since the late 1980s a turbine-driven generator has produced surplus electricity. Today it operates as a tourist attraction with a restaurant and terrace, a souvenir shop and a hiking trailhead, set in the steep, forested valley typical of the high Black Forest.
