About Gengenbach

A half-timbered town in the Kinzig valley whose Baroque town hall turns into a giant illuminated Advent calendar each December, one window opening a day until Christmas Eve.

Gengenbach is a small town in the Kinzig valley in the Ortenau district of Baden-Württemberg, on the western side of the Black Forest. It is known for a well-preserved old town of half-timbered houses. The town grew around the Benedictine Gengenbach Abbey, founded in the 8th century, and held the status of a Free Imperial City from 1360 until the early 1800s. Surviving medieval gate towers include the Kinzigtor and the Obertor, also called the Niggelturm.

On the market square stands the Baroque town hall, an 18th-century building whose facade has 24 windows. Each Advent those 24 windows become a giant illuminated Advent calendar, one revealed each day from 1 to 24 December. The town of around 11,000 people is twinned with Obernai in Alsace, and its parish church of Sankt Marien was rebuilt after war damage in 1689.

Did you know? Each Advent the Baroque town hall's 24 windows become a giant illuminated Advent calendar, one opening daily from 1 to 24 December, and it is widely promoted as the world's largest.
