About Feldberg
The Feldberg is the highest mountain in the Black Forest and Baden-Württemberg, rising to about 1,493 metres, with a glacial tarn, a tower museum and a large non-Alpine ski area.
The Feldberg is a mountain in the Black Forest and the highest peak of both the range and Baden-Württemberg. Its summit reaches about 1,493 metres above sea level, a figure also given as 1,494 depending on the source, with a topographic prominence of around 934 metres. English Wikipedia describes it as the highest in Germany outside of the Alps and Bavaria. On the northeast side, below the subsidiary summit of the Seebuck, lies the Feldsee, a glacial tarn about 33 metres deep at roughly 1,000 metres.
The Seebuck, at about 1,448 metres and served by a cable car, carries the Feldbergturm, a former transmission and radio tower that has housed a museum since 2013. The Feldberg Nature Reserve is the oldest and largest in Baden-Württemberg, with full-time rangers since 1989. In winter the mountain is the biggest ski resort in Germany outside the Alps, with about fourteen lifts and more than fifty kilometres of downhill runs.
Did you know? The Feldberg's summit height is quoted as both 1,493 and 1,494 metres, depending on the source. Its topographic prominence of around 934 metres means it rises well clear of every neighbouring peak in the range.
