About Freiburg Minster (Freiburger Münster)
A soaring Gothic cathedral on Freiburg's market square, famous for its openwork stone spire, its medieval bells, and for standing largely intact through the 1944 air raid on the city.
The Freiburg Minster is a Gothic church rising over the Münsterplatz in the old town of Freiburg im Breisgau. Construction began around 1200 in Romanesque style under Berthold V, Duke of Zähringen, and continued from about 1230 in Gothic forms; the building was essentially completed by 1330. Its west tower reaches about 116 metres and is celebrated for its openwork Gothic spire, described as the only Gothic church tower in present-day Germany completed in the Middle Ages.
The church became a cathedral in 1827, when the Archdiocese of Freiburg was established. Its oldest bell, the Hosanna, was cast in 1258, and the minster carries 19 bells weighing about 25 tonnes in total. The art holdings include altar panels by Hans Baldung Grien and Hans Holbein the Younger. Though the November 1944 raid destroyed much of the surrounding old town, the minster survived largely intact.
