About Old Main Bridge (Alte Mainbrücke)

The Old Main Bridge in Würzburg, a stone bridge of eight arches begun in 1476, with twelve Baroque figures of saints and rulers, where people drink Franconian wine with a view of the fortress.

Until 1886 this was the only bridge over the Main in Würzburg. The present bridge was begun in 1476, but its vaults were only finished in 1703, and the twelve sandstone figures were set up from 1728. Blown up on 2 April 1945, it was rebuilt by 1950, and since 1990 it has been for walkers and cyclists only.

The bridge is free and open at all times. The wine stalls for the Brückenschoppen are seasonal, so in late autumn and winter they may be closed.
