About Juliusspital and Bürgerspital

The Juliusspital and the Bürgerspital in Würzburg, two old charitable foundations of 1576 and around 1316 that still run homes for the elderly and large wine estates, with wine taverns in their courtyards.

Prince-Bishop Julius Echter founded the Juliusspital from his own fortune, and it opened in 1580, endowed with fields, forests and vineyards; part of its site was the levelled cemetery of the expelled Jewish community. The Bürgerspital was founded by a patrician couple around 1316 and run by citizens. Both still own large vineyards, including parts of the Würzburger Stein.

The courtyards, churches and wine taverns are open to visitors; the rest are working buildings. The taverns open daily, while cellar tours with tasting run mostly at weekends.

Did you know? The Bürgerspital in Würzburg was founded around 1316 by a patrician couple who wanted it run by the citizens, not by the church.
