About Würzburger Stein

The Würzburger Stein, a steep vineyard on a limestone hillside north of the old town, where wine has been grown since at least 779, with a walking trail and views over the city.

The Stein faces south on shell limestone, with slopes of up to 65 percent, and it is said to be the largest single vineyard site in Germany. It is shared mainly by the Bürgerspital, the Juliusspital and the state wine cellar. Goethe praised its wine, Steinwein, and a famous bottle from 1540 still lies in the Bürgerspital cellar.

The vineyard is free and open at all times. The Stein-Wein-Pfad, a loop of about 4 km, has steep sections and steps, so wear good shoes. In autumn, after the harvest, the vines turn gold.

Did you know? Wine has been grown on the Würzburger Stein since at least 779, which makes it one of the oldest vineyard sites in Germany.
