About Neumünster
The Neumünster in Würzburg, the Romanesque church with a Baroque dome and a red sandstone front, built over the place where, by tradition, Saint Kilian and his companions were killed and buried.
A memorial church stood here by the eighth century, and the first two bishops of Würzburg were buried in it. The Baroque dome and front were added from 1711 to 1716. In the crypt below, a bronze shrine holds the bones of the three Franconian apostles, while their skulls are kept in the cathedral. The cloister garden beside it is linked by tradition to the poet Walther von der Vogelweide.
The church is open daily; visits stop during services and concerts. A step-free entrance is on the north side, by the Lusam Garden.
Did you know? By tradition, the Neumünster in Würzburg stands where the Irish missionary Kilian and his two companions were killed in 689 and buried.
