About Marienberg Fortress

The Marienberg Fortress, on a hill a hundred metres above the Main in Würzburg, home of the prince-bishops from 1253 to 1719, with an early round church and the Museum für Franken.

A church stood on the hill by the early eighth century, and around 1200 a castle followed. The prince-bishops lived here until 1719, when they moved to the Residence. The fortress held out against the peasants in 1525, fell to the Swedes in 1631 and was badly burned in 1945. The Museum für Franken, in the old armoury, holds the largest collection of works by Tilman Riemenschneider.

The core castle, with the keep, the round church and the Prince's Garden, is closed to individual visitors during a long renovation. The outer courts, the viewpoints and the Museum für Franken stay open; the museum is closed on Mondays. There is no restaurant on the hill.
