About Würzburg Cathedral (Kiliansdom)
Würzburg Cathedral, the Romanesque cathedral of Saint Kilian, begun in 1040, among the largest Romanesque churches in Germany, with tombs by Tilman Riemenschneider and a bright interior rebuilt after 1945.
The present church was begun in 1040 and consecrated in 1187, the third cathedral on the site. Burned out in 1945, it partly collapsed in 1946 and was rebuilt until 1967, with a simpler interior. Inside are the tombs of two bishops by Riemenschneider and the Schönborn Chapel by Balthasar Neumann. Since 1967 it has been dedicated to Saint Kilian and his companions.
The cathedral is open daily, except during services, and it can close for rehearsals. From Monday to Saturday until the end of October, a short organ recital and a guided tour start at midday.
Did you know? Würzburg Cathedral was dedicated to the Saviour and then to Saint Andrew, and only in 1967 did it officially take the name of Saint Kilian.
