About Market Square, Marienkapelle and Falkenhaus

The market square of Würzburg, with the Gothic Marienkapelle, built from 1377 on the site of the synagogue destroyed in 1349, and the Falkenhaus with its rebuilt Rococo front of stucco.

The square lies where the Jewish quarter stood before the pogrom of 21 April 1349, when the Jews of Würzburg were murdered and the synagogue was burned. The Marienkapelle, a citizens' church, was built over about a century from 1377; Balthasar Neumann was buried in it. The Falkenhaus, rebuilt after 1945 from old photographs, holds the tourist office and the city library.

The square is open at all times, with market stalls on several days of the week. The Marienkapelle is usually open to visitors outside services.
